Meet Yolanda Sumpter

Do you have a passion in your life, something that stirs your very soul?  My guest Yolanda Sumpter is just that person.Yolanda is the Commissioner for the LA County Commission on HIV. HIV is an epidemic in the African American women’s community. If you look up tenacity in the dictionary, you will find the definition of Yolanda. She is determined to make a difference for women through education and awareness. African American women make up 61% of women living with HIV.  Beyond those numbers many live without the realization that they have this condition, that’s were Yolanda steps in.

Yolanda will be talking about an organization that she founded.  She is the CEO of The Black Women’s LemonAid Project. www.thelemonaidproject.org.You’ve heard the phrase, “When life serves you lemons, make lemonade.”  Those words were designed to encourage optimism and a positive attitude to overcome adversity; to take something that is sour and make it sweet.

That’s just what she did.  However, not just ordinary lemonade, but lemonade made with love and nurturing. Imagine being thirsty and this vivacious woman approaches you with a cold cup of lemonade. You may think twice, but you soon realize for a nominal price, you would get a delicious drink and so much more.

Here are the core principals of her organization.

Yolanda’s grassroots effort started in her kitchen.  She wanted to find a way to reach out to the women in LA County by doing something she knew how to do, make lemonade.

She can easily start a conversation that provides education to a community that is seriously lacking direct and significant up to date information about HIV.

She’s unwavering even though there are so many hoops she must jump through to see her dream become a reality.

We will be talking about her journey from growing up and educated in South Carolina to arriving in Los Angeles. We will learn why this subject is so important to her.

Yolanda is a smart woman, clever in naming her project LemonAid in order to bring the awareness of HIV to women of color with a cup of lemonade along with a cup of kindness and information.

She’s making a difference. You will be experiencing first hand, her energy and information along with some goals and solutions on Monday, September 19, 2016 during my Born To Talk radio show.
