Larry Payne will be my guest on the Born To Talk Radio Show Podcast on November 7th, from 1-2PT.
Meet Larry.
Larry Payne, Ph.D. is an internationally respected yoga teacher and back specialist. He is credited with being one of the founders of Yoga Therapy in America. The L.A. Times named Larry “One of America’s most respected Yoga teachers.”
Larry has an illustrious career in the yoga world. Here is an example, he is the founding president of the International Association of Yoga Therapists and founder of the Corporate Yoga program at the J. Paul Getty Museum. His accomplishments include being the first Yoga teacher to offer Yoga classes at the World Economic Forum. He is also, the co-founder of the yoga curriculum at UCLA’s School of Medicine, and the founding director of the new Yoga Therapy Certification program at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles. My yoga instructor, from Live Yoga Wellness, Deanna Courtney, is a graduate of his program.
A bit more about Larry. In 1979 he was an advertising executive, plagued with chronic back pain and stress. His quest for relief led him to study yoga and health in eleven countries and inspired his career change upon certification in India.
Samata International Health and Yoga Center.
In 1980, Larry founded the Samata International Yoga & Health Center in Los Angeles. Those of us that practice Yoga appreciate the benefits that come with practicing, whatever that practice means to each of us. Balance is essential for our Body, Breath, and Mind. In the world of yoga, balance requires settling the whole system: the mind, emotions, body, and energy. And as my yoga instructor would add, “without judgment.” This results in “muscle memory.”
One of the featured programs in Larry’s center is Prime of Life Yoga. Have you ever considered teaching yoga? Might be something to consider.
I found it very interesting that adults between the ages of 40-70 are the largest population growth segment for yoga. With that being said, Larry has realized that older adults are suffering injuries from some of the yoga poses.
He will be talking about that and how to avoid injuries.
Larry, the Author.
Many of us are familiar with the book series “for dummies” they cover a wide range of topics. This led Larry to write some books, including: “Yoga After 50 for Dummies“
“This book takes the guesswork out of starting or continuing yoga at 50 and beyond. You’ll learn how to adapt stances and breathing to your changing body to reap the benefits of this ancient practice and use it to calm your mind and body―one pose at a time.”
“Chair Yoga is a guide to developing a yoga practice that you can do while seated in a chair. Traditional yoga poses can be replicated as sitting yoga poses and stretches, enjoyable and accessible for people at all levels of experience and mobility. There’s a reason yoga has been around for thousands of years. Practicing chair yoga regularly can decrease your blood pressure, anxiety, inflammation, and chronic pain. It also increases flexibility, balance, and strength. And it helps you sleep better, too. All you need to get started is yourself, a chair, and this book”
In closing.
It is my hope that this podcast will give you some insight into the values of yoga and how you can apply this practice in your life. It really doesn’t matter if you are lying on a mat or sitting in a chair. Yoga comes in “all sizes” you just need to find the right fit for you!
Inhale and Exhale, breathing is the best place to start!
