Mythology escaped me in school, so you imagine how confused I was as I learned about who was related to who. Here’s the background about Poseidon:
Poseidon’s Strengths:
He is a creative god, designing all the creatures of the sea. He can control waves and ocean conditions.
Poseidon’s Weaknesses:
Warlike, though not so much as Ares; moody and unpredictable.
Spouse: Amphitrite, a sea goddess.
Parents: Kronos, god of time, and Rhea, goddess of the earth. Brother to the gods Zeus and Hades.
Children: Many – second only to Zeus in the number of illicit liaisons.
Some scholars believe he was first a god of the earth and earthquakes, and only later took on the role of sea god.

There are twelve main gods and goddesses:

*Hera- Mother goddess
*Poseidon- God of the seas and river
*Demeter- Goddess of all useful fruits, grains and grasses
*Hephaestus- God of goldsmiths, blacksmiths, jewelers, masons, and carpenters
*Athena- Goddess of wisdom, warfare, crafts and useful arts
*Hades- God of the underworld
*Aphrodite- Goddess of love and beauty
*Ares- God of war
*Apollo- God of sun, music, poetry, medicine and archery
*Artemis- Goddess of the moon, hunting, and unmarried girls
*Hermes- God of merchants, bankers, thieves, fortune tellers and heralds

It’s no wonder I’m confused that is a lot for me to remember. Now coupled with this new information and my visit to Cape Sounion, I see the remnants of the Temple of Poseidon in a different light.
We had a tour guide, that drove us around Athens and then on to the Cape with the goal of being there at sunset. Stelios Spinoulas was our guide for the afternoon. He understood that…Have Camera, Will Shoot…was my mantra.
I’m going to focus on this day as we journeyed around the city. There it is on the hill. The Poseidon Temple built from 440-444 B.C.
The grounds around the Cape, where we stopped for a snack, were beautiful. There were familiar flowers, like this Mallow Lavatera, that I have in my front yard.
Others, were not familiar, but oh so lovely.
I’ve spent a lot of time writing about cats and dogs and birds…but this bird may be the prize winner of the trip. The partridges made me think of the famous family with Shirley Jones and David Cassidy. They were stunning and more than willing to pose.
And if you listen very carefully, you may hear David Partridge singing, C’mon Get Happy!
As the sun was beginning to set, the glow was changing the colors on the columns.
Here comes the reason our guide said we needed to be here at sunset.

But this isn’t the end of my stories, oh no…I haven’t told you about the changing of the guards at the Parliament or the Olympic Stadium highlight of the trip.
