Carol Rosenstein will be my guest on the Born To Talk Radio Show Podcast on, Monday, October 10th, from 1-2p PT.
Dynamic Carol.
Carol is the Executive Director and Co-Founder of Music Mends Minds, Inc. She is an educator and pioneer in the field of holistic mind-body medicine. After her career as a chiropractor, she became interested in total mind-body health. Then she acquired a Master’s in Transformational Psychology to help her further delve into alternative and complementary medicine.
Carol became very interested in the power of music as a form of acoustic art and therapy. Carol’s husband, Irwin was diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 2006, which later digressed into dementia. Carol and Irwin felt their lives slipping away while dealing with the adversities of Parkinson’s Disease and early dementia.
In 2014, Carol enrolled Irwin in the UCLA Alzheimer’s and Dementia Patient Care program. After she observed him playing the piano on minimal medication, she watched him revive like a wilted flower being watered. It was when Irwin began playing the piano for participating students and adults, something miraculous happened. Within weeks, it was clear that playing music empowered him. He became more aware, responsive, confident, energetic, talkative, and hopeful. Carol recognized the power of music in changing brain chemistry.
The 5th Dementia
Later that year, Carol launched Music Mends Minds and the organization’s inaugural flagship band, The 5th Dementia. They are a diverse band featuring former professionals from a range of socioeconomic and educational backgrounds who now struggle to remember anything at all due to their illnesses. Except for the music, which they are easily able to recall.
They come together to play and sing a list of songs compiled by their bandleader. When the music starts, they are transformed. The rhythms and melodies stir something deep within them. These men and women who lead lives with little social interaction, dive right into songs from their generation without a single page of sheet music. Subsequently, difficult-to-reach memories are unlocked. The music has a euphoric and quality of life-changing impact.

In Closing.
Carol continues to advocate for the power of music as medicine. This is corroborated by the scientific community to bring pure joy and increased brain function to patients suffering from neurodegenerative diseases. This includes traumatic brain injury and stroke. Along with PTSD, caregivers, and families at large.
Please join us as we talk about the importance of music in the lives of so many.
