Thanks to Keith Wilkins and Melissa Dollard from the Seaside Seabird Sanctuary for joining me today on the Born To Talk Radio Show Podcast.
If you have been following me on my website and Facebook, then you know that I have a real love for the Seabirds, especially the Pelicans. We have lots of Brown Pelicans that hang out in Marina Del Rey, California and as an amateur photographer, they are my favorite bird to photograph.
I learned so much about what they do. Their main mission is to rescue, treat and rehabilitate the wild birds. But I learned they also treat birds of prey, including owls, hawks, and vultures. It was fascinating to hear about what it takes to operate a Sanctuary including the Dr. Marie L. Farr Avian Hospital that Melissa runs. Imagine, they see between 2,000-2,500 birds a year! Currently, there are 110 permanently disablable birds living at the Sanctuary. For those injuries that are unable to be addressed at the Hospital, they are sent to local veterinarians, where they treat these birds at no charge.
As a non-profit 501 (c) (3) the Sanctuary relies upon on the generosity of their donors. I had no idea how much food and the variety of food that they go through in a week. You’ll hear all about that.
There were interesting facts that you will learn about including, how much does a Brown Pelican weigh?
Clearly, Keith and Melissa are dedicated staff at the Seaside Seabird Sanctuary. Make sure you check out their website to see more of the interesting things they do that includes the educational and volunteer opportunities, just to name a few.
Just a couple more of my photos from my visit including the Vulture and Eastern Brown Pelican.
Hope you enjoyed the show. Maybe you have a story to tell. Remember, I was…
