Let’s meet Kathleen.

Kathleen and her husband live in a brick row house in Boston and a converted bait shack on a dock in mid-coast Maine.

To begin with, Kathleen studied art history at Oberlin College and holds a JD from Boston University School of Law and an MFA from Bennington College. As a lawyer, she was a law clerk to a federal district court judge and a litigation partner in a law firm. Kathleen was also a senior counsel in a financial institution and a solo practitioner. Subsequently, she taught seminars on American law in six foreign countries as a Fulbright Senior Specialist and through the Center for International Legal Studies.

After many years practicing law and writing countless legal briefs, she turned to other sorts of writing. Introducing her book, which was just released his month.

They Called Us Girls.

Kathleen is the author of They Called Us Girls: Stories of Female Ambition from Suffrage to Mad Men,

They Called Us Girls is a collective biography of seven women who aspired to professional jobs in the mid-twentieth century. It was an era when women were expected to find fulfillment at home, in the mold of television’s June Cleaver. But these women broke the mold, defying expectations to succeed in jobs reserved almost exclusively for men. They include 2 doctors, a lawyer, artist, physicist, executive director, and intelligence officer.

Kathleen interviewed these women, all born before 1935, about their ambition. Where did it come from and how did it play out? They talked about early experiences and influences. For example, parents, family friends, teachers, even institutions like settlement houses. Some had professors who encouraged them; others were told no woman belonged in the field. Some spouses gave invaluable support; others none at all. Many found strong mentors in the workplace.

Perhaps, in your family, you may also know women that were “ahead of their time” in society. Or, like me, you may have daughters, that are working in what was considered “a man’s occupation.”

They Called Us Girls is a fascinating and inspirational book about female ambition and unorthodox paths toward a fulfillment that is essential reading for women and girls today.
