Come Aboard with Alice Taylor and Noah Kalb

All hands-on deck, as we learn about the Los Angeles Maritime Institute TopSail Youth Program with my guests Alice Taylor and Noah Kalb.

Tune into LATalkLive and Ustream, Monday, January 29 starting at 1:00 PT on my Born To Talk Radio Show.

Their mission:

“The Los Angeles Maritime Institute (LAMI) serves to empower youth to discover their greater potential through extraordinary at-sea experiences aboard educational sailing vessels built to train and equip young people with 21st century leadership skills and inspire maritime and STEM career paths.”

Their vision:

“We envision a thriving community where every young person can look to the future with confidence and navigate successfully and responsibly in life.”

We will be talking about their award-winning non-profit year-round TopSail Youth Program designed for middle and high school students. This is a hands-on education and adventure experience aboard tall sailing ships consisting of day sails voyages or both. The program integrates youth into the ship’s crew where they learn how to operate a large sailing and experience a highly interactive learning environment at sea. Skills gained include team building, problem solving, decision-making, planning, self-reliance and leadership. Our unique learning environment introduces underserved and economically disadvantaged youth to a world beyond their communities where they are provided with real-life challenges not available in the traditional classroom.

Founded in 1992 by a science teacher and sailor, Captain Jim Gladson, they have served over 60,000 young people with transformational experiences at sea and changed the course for thousands of youth who were on a dropout path leading to gangs, drugs, and crime.

How do these experiences translate into the classroom? What do the teachers see as the result of the TopSail program?

Do you have a love of sailing, perhaps you would like to volunteer?  You don’t live in the Los Angeles area, no problem, this show may inspire you to do start a program like this where you live.

Come aboard as we spend an hour talking about this great program.
